… or rather, the feeling of remorse. Today’s crime … being alive, semi healthy, and not poor.
Today, on the way to the beach, I was sitting on the guagua and a new passenger was boarding. She wasn’t very old. This woman child appeared special needs. Appearance can be misleading, she also had two new casts on the bottoms of her legs, and was being carried aboard stretcher style. A possible surgery and more than likely pain killers and not special needs but in that condition very difficult to tell. I was closer to the front of the bus, I didn’t turn to watch as many did. How they managed to position her and care for her for their journey is mind boggling. She was very thin and appeared very frail.
That is family devotion and Dominican ingenuity to get her home. Whether ingenuity or necessity, it’s still plain ingenious.
I was pensive for a while, feeling great sympathy and some remorse. I liken it to survivor guilt.
I am oh so grateful that their burden is not to be shared. Yes, though a little selfish, one cannot carry the weight of the world upon their shoulders. Remorse … survivor guilt … need to be replaced with pride and awe. I’m so proud to see the heart of the people of this country.
Listen to the palms…
